Okinawa Prefecture is Japan’s southernmost region and the only prefecture composed entirely of islands. Located in the East China Sea, it historically served as a maritime crossroads between China, Japan, and Southeast Asia. From 1429 to 1879, the Ryukyu Kingdom governed the islands, fostering a vibrant trade culture and distinct traditions that continue to shape Okinawan identity today.
In 1879, Okinawa was formally annexed by Japan, followed by decades of cultural suppression. The island later became the site of the Battle of Okinawa in 1945 — one of World War II’s most devastating conflicts. The United States occupied Okinawa until 1972, and U.S. military bases remain present on the island today.

Carbon Removal: According to the State of Global Carbon Dioxide Removal Report by University of Oxford, natural methods of removing carbon from the atmosphere are not enough by themselves due to the amount of pollution currently in the atmosphere. Innovations in removing and permanently storing carbon emissions are needed to conserve nature and reverse the course toward further climate change.
